ABSTRACT
To Review the management and outcome of patients with ASD at Ahmad Gasim cardiac surgery center and to compare with international studies.

Methodology:

All patients who had ASD repair in Ahmad Gasim cardiac center in the period 1998-2004 were studied. The data studied included age, sex, resident, clinical presentation, physical signs, investigations, diagnosis and postoperative complications. Most of the 40 patients presented with shortness of breath, palpitation and repeated chest infections while split 2nd heart sound and soft murmur were the common physical findings. The echocardiography was efficient in the diagnosis of ASD; the common ASD type was secundum [70%]. Postoperative complications were minor and included pulmonary complications, self-limiting arrhythmia and pericardial effusion. The mortality rate was 140 patients. Surgical closure of ASD is safe even in those above 40 years with only minor complications and low mortality rate
