ABSTRACT
Anaerobic infection is the cause of significant morbidity and mortality in obstetrics and gynecology. To find the incidence of anaerobic wound infection following obstetric and gynecologic operations, 50 cases of infected wounds were studied. Specimens taken from septic wounds were examined macroscopically, microscopically and by culture on blood agar, Mac Conkey's cooked meat and Columbia blood agar. Anaerobes were isolated in 44% of obstetric cases and in 48% of gynecologic cases. Bacteroid fragilis was the most common anaerobic organism followed by peptococci and peptostreptoccoci. It is recommended to assume the presence of anaerobes in purulent surgical wounds when treatment has to be undertaken before the results of bacteriology are available
