Anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activity of sufoof-e-satt-E-Gilo-sartani a polyherbal unani formulation

ABSTRACT

Sufoof-e-san-e-gilo-sartani, is a polyherbal Unani formulation, traditionally used for treating phthisis, tuberculosis, bronchitis, diarrhoea, traditionally known to have antipyretic, cough relieving and soothing actions. The formulation was screened for anti-inflammatory activity and in vitro antibacterial activity. Aqueous suspension of the formulation was screened for in vivo anti-inflammatory activity at dose levels of 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg, using carrageenan induced rat paw oedema test. The formulation showed a moderate anti-inflammatory activity, the results were compared with standard anti-inflammatory drug, Indomethacin @ 20 mg/kg orally. Various extracts and suspensions prepared from the formulation were screened for antibacterial activity using agar well diffusion method against two standard strains of bacteria, viz. Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. However, the extracts and suspensions were not found effective against both the standard bacterial strains.
