ABSTRACT
Abnormalities of right ventricular [RV] function play an important role in the development of clinical symptoms and the overall prognosis of patients with mitral stenosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the immediate impact of percutaneous balloon mitral valvuloplasty [PMV] on right ventricular function in patients with mitral stenosis [MS]. This study included twenty patients referred for Balloon Mitral valvuloplasty according to the recommendation of American Heart Association [AHA] [At Bab Al-Shexreya University Hospital - Al-Azhar University - Cairo - Egypt] from August 2008 to June 2009; all patients were subjected to full history taking, resting 12 lead ECG and transthoracic echo-Doppler study. Right ventricle out flow tract fractional shortening [RVOT FS%] showed significant improvement after PMV, and significant correlation with MVA. Estimated Systolic Pulmonary Artery Pressure [ESPAP mmHg] showed extremely significant decrease after PMV and negative correlation with MVA. Tei Index showed very significant decrease after PMV and significant negative correlation with MVA. RV EF% measurement by [2D] showed extreme increase after PMV, and significant correlation with MVA. RVFAC% showed extremely significant increase after PMV. Immediately after successful PMV, parameters of infundibular and global RV function as assessed by RVOTFS and Tei index showed significant improvement. Also RV fractional area change and RV ejection fraction showed significant improvement
