Management of complex foot deformities by Ilizarov method and fixator

ABSTRACT

There are many drawbacks and difficulties in correction of complex foot deformities by conventional methods. Ilizarov fixator and method were used for gradual correction of these deformities to achieve plantigrade feet without compromising soft tissues or feet lengths. This work included 26 patients with 31 deformed feet from different eitiology. There were 12 relapsed and neglected talipes equino varus, 8 neuropathic feet, 4 post-truamatic, one arthroryposis, and one post burn contractures. There were 15 males and 11 females with mean age of 11.24 years [4-32 years]. Deformity correction was done through soft tissues distraction except in 3 paients who had associated bony deformities which needed osteotomies for correction. Calcneocuboid fusion was done in three feet to maintain correction. Plantigrade feet were gained in all feet except three who had residual deformities. The most common complications were pin tract infection which occurred in most patients and flexion contractures of the toes which occurred in a few cases. The method of Ilizarov and its fixator is an effective alternative in treating such cases of complex foot deformities
