ABSTRACT
This study was conducted on 1534 Saudi males and females to establish 'normal reference intervals' for group specific component [Gc] protein concentration, using rate nephelometry. The reference intervals were established using mean +/- 2SD and 2.5th to 97.5th percentiles. In the overall population the Gc reference interval was 32.8 +/- 14 mg/dl, while in the male and female populations, the reference intervals were 31.6 +/- 13.2 mg/dl and 33.9 +/- 16 mg/dl respectively. When grouped on the basis of age, the lowest Gc level was in the = 10 years age group [30 +/- 10 mg/dl] and the highest in the 31-40 years age group [34.6 +/- 18.2 mg/dl]. Beyond this age the level decreased to 30.7 +/- 16.4 mg/dl in the male and 32.0 +/- 1 5.6 mg/dl in the female. This paper presents Gc 'normal reference intervals in the Saudi population and discusses the results in relation to those reported for other populations
