Some toxicological effects of capsaicin on normal and diabetic rats

ABSTRACT
Single dose of capsaicin [10, 25, 50, 75 and 100mg/ 100g Bw] was administered by a stomach tube into normal and diabetic rats and after three hours, several biochemical analyses were carried out [Short-term experiment]. Multi-doses of capsaicin [5, 10, 20 and 30 mg/100g Bw] were administered daily for 21 days [long-term experiment]. Capsaicin significantly increased blood glucose level, while single administration of 10 or 25 mg capsaicin into diabetic rats decreased blood glucose. In normal rats, the concentrations of cholesterol, phospholipids, triglycerides and total lipids were increased by multi-doses of capsaicin, while single dose of capsaicin increased both cholesterol and phospholipids, but triglycerides level was decreased. In diabetic rats, triglycerides and total lipids were increased by multi-doses of capsaicin. Alkaline phosphatase activity in plasma of normal rats was inhibited. Lactic acid dehydrogenase and creatine phosphokinase activities in plasma in addition to testosterone and follicle stimulating hormone were greatly dropped. Concentrations of urea and creatinine in blood were increased by multi-doses of capsaicin
