ABSTRACT
A historical review of the use of plastic for cervical disc replacement is presented. A retrospective review and compilation of the work of current workers in the field is presented. The advantage and complications of the method and the various approaches to use plastic in cervical disc replacement are illustrated. It is concluded that the procedure does not work and that the previously feared radiolucent line at the plastic bone interface is not necessarily a sign of non fusion. The combined use of graft and methyl methacrylate for anterior cervical fusion has been proved to be instant stabilization with restoration of anatomical position with no need for external brace or support. Also, it shortened the hospital stay with no pain or complication accompanied by very rapid return to normal occupational activities
