ABSTRACT
The sera of 300 blood donors of Alexanderia Military Traning Centers of about 20 to 25 years old were examined for HBsAg, anti HCV and HIV antibodies using Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay [ELISA]. Liver function tests [SGOT and SGPT] were also done. It was found that all sera were negative for HIV, 11.3% were positive for HBsAg, 6.6% were positive for anti HCV and 2% were positive for both HBsAg and HCV. The enzymes SGPT and SGOT were elevated in subjects with positive HBsAg and/or anti HCV. Results suggest that screening blood donors for anti HCV will reduce the risk of transfusion associated hepatitis
