ABSTRACT
This is a cross-sectional follow up study to evaluate the progress in the immunization status of the children underfive in Ain-shams Village, Makkah region, Saudi Arabia. The use of a simple immunization recall system for defaulters was also assessed. The presence of a system to ensure coverage with MMR and booster DPT and polio doses was verified in all health regions in the country. All underfives and one of their parents were included in the study. Results showed that although all underfive children had been given their essential immunizations, none had received mumps or rubella vaccine. Only one had the DPT and polio booster dose. Three health regions had a defined system to ensure coverage with MMR and DPT polio booster doses. The used recall system proved effective, and the adoption of such system was suggested. An effective education programme high lighting the value of immunization for the health of the child, and special emphasis on booster doses and pre-school immunization were recommended
