ABSTRACT
Twenty one Egyptian patients with gallstone disease have been randomly admitted at Ismailia General Hospital in 1993 and 1994. Cholecystectomy, and wedge liver biopsy were performed for every patient. Specimens were routinely processed in the Pathology Department, Faculty of Medicine, and sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin, masson trichrome, and periodic acid schiff stains. The majority of patients were females with a mean age of 42.8 years. Histological examination of liver sections showed non-specific reactive changes in 11 cases [52.4%], chronic hepatitis with suggestion of virus C infection in 5 cases [23.8%], liver cirrhosis in 2 cases [9.5%], schistosomal infection in 2 cases [9.5%], and alcoholic-like hepatitis in one case [4.8%]. The findings were discussed and compared with those reported in the literature
