ABSTRACT
Enterohepatic recycling of estrogen after oral administration of 1mg nonradioactive estriol [E3] was studied in two women who had undergone ileal resection and in fourteen healty women selected as the control subjects, during the early follicular phase of menstrual cycle. Urinary excretion of estriol - alpha - glucuronide [F3 - 16 alpha - G] and estriol - 3 - glucuronide [E3 - 3 - G] which are the main metabilities of E3 was monitored during 48 hours in order to assess the extent of enterohepatic recycling of estrogen. The urinary excretion profile of E3 metabilities and lower value of E3 - 3 - G output which could be regarded as good index of enterohepatic recycling of E3, indicate that ileal resection could lead to a marked reduction in the extent of enterohepatic recycling of estrogen and its derivatives
