Intravenous propofol anaesthesia with xylazine and diazepam premedication in dogs

ABSTRACT
Three groups of dogs were used. In group I, dogs injected with 8 mg/kg I/V propofol without premedication. The mean duration of anesthesia was 12.3 +/- 1.19 minutes. In group II, dogs injected with 4 mg/kg propofol I/V after premedication with 0.05 mg/kg atropine and 1 mg/kg xylazine I/V. The mean duration of anesthesia was 28.3 +/- 1.55 minutes. In group III, dogs injected with 4 mg/kg propofol I/V after premedication with 0.05 mg atropine, 1 mg/kg xylazine and 0.2 mg/kg diazepam I/V. The mean duration of anesthesia was 41 +/- 1.27 minutes. It was noticed that premedication effectively increased the duration of anesthesia. Maintenance of anesthesia was carried out by injection of 2 mg/kg propofol I/V in groups II and III. The duration of anesthesia and recovery was increased. The mean recovery times were 17 +/- 0.72, 15 +/- 1.25 minutes, respectively. However, propofol anesthesia and maintenance showed significant decreases [P <0.05] in rectal temperature and respiratory rates, heart rates remained within physiologic limits. Hematologic values showed significant decrease [P <0.05] in PCV, RBCs and WBCs counts from the base line values. Satisfactory smooth induction of anesthesia, maintenance and recovery were obtained in dogs under various surgical procedures
