ABSTRACT
Twenty-four infants and young children [fifteen males and nine females] who suffered hypoxic-ischemic brain injuries in the period of one year were evaluated by brain MR examination [Siemens Magnetom 63 SP]. Patients with abnormal MR findings were classified according to type of asphyxia into perinatal asphyxia group [fourteen patients], postnatal asphyxia group [four patients] and combined peri and postnatal asphyxia group [two patients]. All cases were assessed for morphology and signal pattern abnormalities of the different brain structures. MR proved to have a major role in the assessment of hypoxic ischemic brain injury in newborn infants and children
