Concomitant boost accelerated radiation therapy for advanced squamoys cell carcinoma of the larynx and hypopharynx

ABSTRACT
Sixty-two patients with stages III and IV laryngeal and hypopharyngeal carcinoma were irradiated and were eligible for analysis with a minimum follow up of 12 months. In this study group, thirty-two patients received 180 cGy per fraction, five fractions per week during the first three weeks then another dose of 180 cGy was added after a minimum of six hours from the first dose to cover the primary tumor site only during the second two weeks of treatment with a total tumor dose of 63 Gy in 35 fractions over 35 days overall treatment period. The control group received conventional fraction radiation therapy with a total tumor dose of 70 Gy in 35 fractions over 49 days. Total laryngectomy or laryngopharyngectomy was done for patients with residual lesions
