ABSTRACT
The polysaccharide fraction of Lupinus albus herb was isolated andinvestigated using complete hydrolysis and high pressure liquid chromatography[HPLC]. The obtained results revealed the presence of D-galacturonic acid. The protective effect of the polysaccharide was studied against cadmiuminduced hepatotoxicity in rats. The polysaccharide was found to possess aprotective effect as evident by low serum value of alanine aminotransferase[ALT] and aspartate aminotransferase [AST] in rats treated with polysaccharidebefore cadmium-induced hepatotoxicity compared to those receiving cadmium alone. The hepatoprotective activity was 73%. Furthermore, the histopathological changes induced by cadmium was ameliorated by treatment with the polysaccharide at a dose level of 0.5 g/kg
