ABSTRACT
Hemiplegia / Hemiparesis is a common complication of CNS diseases. This is a retrospective study in which we collected 47 patients who were admitted with different neurological disorders in Emam Khomeini hospital, Tabriz, Iran. Of the 47 patients, 31 [66%] were miles and 16 [34%] females. Hemiparesis was found in 9 [19%] including 7 males and 2 females. The age of patients varied between 5 and 71 years. The different neurological disorders diagnosed in these 47 patients included multiple sclerosis [7 cases], CNS tumors [4 cases], epilepsy, including status. epilepticus, [14 cases], encephalitis [9 cases], Hypokalemic paralysis [7 cases], single seizure [4 cases] and CNS trauma [2 cases]. All the cases with tumor [4] had hemiparasis, while 3 out of 7 cases of M.S. and 2 of 9 cases of encephilitis had hemiparesis. All patients who presented with hemiparesis due to brain tumors and multiple sclerosis were male. Both patients with hemiparesis due to encephalitis were females. None of the patients with epilepsy, status epilepticus, hypokalemic paralysis and CNS trauma had hemiplegia / hemiparesis. We conclude that a significant percentage of patients with hemiplegia / hemipares have non=vascular cause which should be carefully investigated for proper management
