Spirooctanones II react with acetoacetanilide to form tetrahydro-naphthalene derivatives IIIa,b, which react with phosphorus oxychloride to give the corresponding chloro derivatives IV. Compounds IV react with hydrazine hydrate, aniline, and hydroxylamine to give the corresponding compounds V, VI and VII, respectively.
