ABSTRACT
Thirty infants with HIE [cases] and 15 normal infants [control] were included in this study. Cases with HIE were classified into HIE group I [13 cases], HIE group II [11 cases], and HIE group III [6 cases]. Cranial US was done to all cases and control group at the first week of life without sedation. The US studies were reviewed with specific attention to the size of the ventricles, the presence and extent of parenchymal abnormalities and the presence and degree of IVH. The results showed that abnormal brain parenchyma was found in 70% of cases. Regarding the outcome, 24 cases improved [most of them belong to HIE group I] and 6 cases died [all belonged to HIE group II and group III]. Thus, cranial US is a good predictor of HIE. It must be carried out for all suspected cases, especially those with risk factors to diagnose the case early and give them the proper care
