ABSTRACT
A prospective study to screen high risk [type 1 diabetes mellitus] subjects for autoimmune thyroid disease was carried out on 55 patients at JPMC, Karachi from January to December 1998. Thyroid dysfunction was noted in 11 out of 55 patients screened. Microsomal antibody was present in high titre [mean 17866.667] in 9 patients and thyroglobulin antibody was found in low titre [mean 1121.429] in 9 patients. Thyroid dysfunction has significant association with Type-I diabetes. Microsomal antibodies alone are good predictors of autoimmune thyroid disease in these patients
