ABSTRACT
In this study, 26 patients with intraocular diseases were evaluated by magnetic resonance imaging. Malignant uveal melanoma was diagnosed in 16 patients underwent surgery with a histopathological confirmation of melanoma. MRI allowed the detection of uveal melanoma with their characteristic signal intensity secondary to the paramagnetic properties of the melanin. In addition, tumor characterization improved the detection of tumor margins and extraocular extension. MRI also proved to be valuable for differentiating uveal melanoma from associated subretinal effusion, choroidal detachment and other tumors [choroidal hemangioma, metastases and retinoblastoma]
