Serum prolactin levels in lactating women using Progestasert system

ABSTRACT

The pre-nursing serum prolactin levels were determine in two groups of lactating and menstruating mothers, six months after delivery, and fitted with Cu T-200 IUD and Progestasert intrauterine system immediately postpartum. No significant differences in the premenstrual and menstrual mean +/- SE prolactin values were noted in comparison with matched group not using any form of contraception. A uniform rise in prolactin levels was observed with the onset of menses in the three categories studied, but this was only significant in the Prgestasert group.
