A four-year study of tetanus was initiated in 1988 at the Peoples' Medical College Hospital, Nawabshah. The records of 72 patients admitted during a period of almost 4 years were reviewed. They included 48 [66.67%] males, and 24 [33.33%] females; all the males, and all but 7 females, belonged to the rural areas. Tracheostomy was performed for respiratory assistance, but no case was subjected to total paralysis regimen because of lack of facilities of artificial positive pressure respiration [APPR].
