RESUMO
Um novo agente envolvido com hepatites não A-E, denominado como vírus da hepatite G ou vírus GB-C (HGV/GBV-C) foi recentemente descoberto. Este vírus pertence à família Flaviviridae, formando um grupo distinto junto com o HCV, GBV-A e GBV-B. A transmissão deste vírus é feita principalmente por transfusões sanguineas, mas também pode ocorrer transmissão vertical, e mesmo horizontal, em comunidades fechadas. Este vírus foi encontrado em casos de hepatites agudas, crônicas e fulminantes em diferentes regiões do mundo, inclusive no Brasil.
