ABSTRACT
This article comments upon the UNESCO Declaration on the human genome and human rights, unanimously approved by the Assembly the 11/11/97. The general framework that the Declaration develops is based on a central issue the dignity of the human being and the genome. A series of principles are derived from this fundamental vertex non-discrimination, protection of intimacy in regard to the new genetics, non-ownership of the genome, free access to progress in genetics, and international solidarity. The Declaration takes on relevance by making an important step towards guiding the conduct of States and individuals in the defense of human rights threatened by new life technologies. In order to accomplish the proposed goals of the Declaration, States, intermediate organizations and individuals should take an active part in perfecting it by promoting a widespread, multi-disciplinary, and pluralistic debate
