RESUMEN

Se analiza la tasa de natalidad, mortalidad materna, perinatal e infantil, ocurridas en Chile en 1998, comparadas con 1990. Ellas han disminuido en -21,5 por ciento; -49,2 por ciento y -35,1 por ciento respectivamente. Se aprecia un aumento de la tasa de recién nacidos prematuros de +2,7 por ciento y del muy bajo peso al nacer de +9,0 por ciento, sin que aumente la tasa de mortalidad neonatal precoz (-32,3 por ciento), hechos que se interpretan como un mejor diagnóstico y manejo perinatal
