RESUMO

Violence against women as a worldwide public health problem is reviewed. This problem has a great impact on morbidity and mortality. Economic and social development is also affected. Damage on physical and mental health as a result of violence is analyzed. There are several proposals in order to increase autonomy and self-esteem in women.
