RESUMO

This article is an advance of the information compiled by the author during the process of definition and preparation of a wide project of the Inter Américan Indianist Institute destined to elaborate and publish an Encyclopedia of the Indigenous People of América. For every country of the region it offers the report of its inhabitant ethnic or indigenous groups and an estimate of each ethhic group's population by 1994. By presenting this data, the author offers a global vision of the economical, social and political situation of these groups, their initiatives, demands and strategies, as well as a brief description of the large groups in which they are distributed around the continent
