Background:

the body mass index (BMI) has not been systematically used for the evaluation of adiposity in prepuberal children. The normal range for our population is not known.

Purpose:

to define the local normal range for prepuberal children and compare it with the values of other populations.

Setting:

Hospital Privado de Córdoba, Argentina. Desing Cross sectional descriptive study. Population 135 boys and 133 girls (total 268) between 1 and 9 years old, randomyl selected among.

methods:

The BMI (weight/height2) were calculated and the centiles constructed from log-among 12500.

Result:

percentiles 3,5 and 97,0 are given according to age and sex.

Conclusions:

Our data are similar but not identical to those that have been published. They may facilitate early interventions and permit longuitudinal investigations oriented to define the BMI associated with increased morbidity and mortality in adults
