Imagen social de la enfermería en Cuba y en Belice / Social image of Nursing in Cuba and in Belize

RESUMEN

Se tiene poca información sobre la imagen que tiene la sociedad de la enfermería y el estatus social que le asigna. Este problema afecta al personal de esta especialidad, pues no tiene un conocimiento real de su posición en la sociedad, y esta a su vez, puede no tener una valoración cierta de la profesión. Se realizó un estudio descriptivo de corte transversal en Caibarién, Villa Clara, Cuba y en el distrito Belice City en Belice, Centro América, durante los años 2004 y 2005. El universo de estudio quedó constituido por 32 600 habitantes en Cuba y 75 000 en Belice, se realizó un muestreo aleatorio estratificado considerando como estratos el sexo y el lugar de residencia; quedaron 1 630 personas en Cuba y 1 600 en Belice como tamaño muestral. A todas las personas que conformaron la muestra se les aplicó una encuesta para saber sus consideraciones acerca de los cuidados brindados por enfermería, actividades a realizar por este personal, imagen que les merece y su estatus social. El 46,16 por cientode los encuestados fueron hombres y el 53,83 por ciento mujeres; el 93,50 porciento en Cuba y el 64,00 por ciento en Belice respondió que el personal de enfermería puede ser de ambos sexos, el 91,80 por ciento de cubanos y el 88,75 por ciento de beliceños consideró que habían sido bien cuidados por el personal de enfermería. Se concluyó que la sociedad, en las comunidades estudiadas, concede a la enfermería un elevado estatus y espera importantes aportaciones de estos profesionales(AU)

ABSTRACT

One has little information on the image that has the society of the infirmary and the social status that it assigns him. This problem affects the personnel of this specialty, because he/she doesn't have a real knowledge of its position in turn in the society, and this, he/she cannot have a certain valuation of the profession. He/she was carried out a descriptive study of traverse court in Caibarién, Villa Clara, Cuba and in the district Belize City in Belize, Center America, during the years 2004 and 2005. The study universe was constituted by 32 600 inhabitants in Cuba and 75 000 in Belize, he/she was carried out a stratified aleatory sampling considering as strata the sex and the residence place; they were 1 630 people in Cuba and 1 600 in Belize like size muestral. To all the people that conformed the sample they were applied a survey to know their considerations about the cares toasted by infirmary, activities to carry out for this personnel, image that deserves them and their social status. The 46,16 for cientode those interviewed were men and 53,83 percent women; 93,50 percent by Cuba and 64,00 percent in Belize responded that the infirmary personnel can be of both sexes, 91,80 percent of Cuban and 88,75 beliceños percent considered that they had been very taken care by the infirmary personnel. You concluded that the society, in the studied communities, grants to the infirmary a high status and these professionals' wait important contributions(AU)
