ABSTRACT
The diagnosis of symptomatic deep vein thrombosis is well established using duplex scanning, with a sensitivity of 100 percent and specificity of 98 percent for proximal deep vein thrombosis, and 94 percent sensitivity and 75 percent specificity for distal deep vein thrombosis. In the early and asymptomatic deep vein thrombosis, diagnosis by duplex scanning is not well established yet, which shows a decrease in the accuracy of this diagnostic method. This is because the fresh thrombus is not occlusive, has the same echogenicity as blood and a reduced consistency, jeopardizing the compressibility test, which is the most sensitive test for deep vein thrombosis. This article will review published articles, which evaluated the accuracy of the duplex scanning in the diagnosis of asymptomatic deep vein thrombosis.
