ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to describe and to compare the health-related physical fitness indicatorsin male students, ranging from 8 to 10 years of age, living in the urban region of São Luiz Gonzaga-RS. The subjects were randomly selected by conglomerates. The sample (457) was stratified by age into three groups(123 were 8-year-old, 157 were 9-year-old, and 177 were 10-year-old). The variables analyzed were: 1-minutesit-up test, sit-and-reach flexibility test and 9-minute run; fat percentage and classification according to thepercentage. For the statistical analyses of these variables were used a descriptive method, one-sample t test, and a One-Way ANOVA with Tukey post-hoc test (p<0,05) to identify the differences. Based upon the results, there were no differences (p > 0.05) in the health-related physical fitness indicators among groups, except forflexibility (8 year-old > 10 year-old) and the 9-minute run (10 year-old > 8 year-old). The majority (64.9%) of thestudents had good body fat levels, and better physical fitness test performances than the AAHPERD batterycriteria (1984). However, 24.4% of these schoolchildren had excess levels of body fat, and 10.8% of the studentshad body fat levels below 10%.
