Habilidad de cuidado de los cuidadores familiares de personas en situación de enfermedad crónica por Diabetes Mellitus / Caring ability of family care givers with relatives who are chronically ill due to Diabetes Mellitus

RESUMEN

El objetivo del estudio es describir el nivel de habilidad de cuidado de los cuidadores familiares de personas en situación de enfermedad crónica por Diabetes Mellitus; se aplicó una metodología de tipo descriptivo exploratorio con abordaje cuantitativo. La población del estudio estuvo conformada por cuidadores familiares de personas con Diabetes Mellitus con complicaciones, que recibían atención en el Hospital Universitario Erasmo Meoz (HUEM) en el segundo semestre de 2005. Se realizó un muestreo de tipo no probabilístico por conveniencia; en el estudio participaron 77 cuidadores familiares de personas que asistían al servicio de consulta externa del HUEM, que llevaban tres meses o más en el desempeño del rol. El instrumento empleado en la recolección de información fue el “inventario de habilidad de cuidado” (CAI) de la doctora Ngozi O. Nkongho, que permite cuantificar el grado de habilidad de cuidado que una persona puede tener para cuidar de otra; está conformado por 37 ítems con graduación de tipo Likert, identifica y mide dimensiones cognoscitivas y afectivas de la habilidad de cuidado en las subescalas de conocimiento, valor y paciencia.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to describe the caring ability level of family caregivers with relatives who are chronically ill due to diabetes mellitus. A descriptive exploratory methodology with quantitative approach was applied. The population of the study was made up of family caregivers of patients with complications derived from Diabetes Mellitus who received attention at the Hospital Universitario Erasmo Meoz (HUEM) during the first semester of 2005. A non-probabilistic sample was selected by convenience. The study counted with the participation of 77 family caregivers of people who attended the outpatient service at the Hospital Universitario Erasmo Meoz. All of the participants had played the role of caregivers for at least three months. The informa ion was gat he red using Doctor Ngozi O. Nkong ho’s Caring Ability Inventory (CAI), a tool to measure a person’s ability to care for another. Made up of 37 Likert test items, the scale identifies and measures the cognitive and affective dimensions in the knowledge, courage and patience caring ability subscales.The study shows that, notwithstanding the time spent as caregivers and the relations hip with the patient, the majority of the participants have not reached the necessary caring ability, neither total norin the knowledge, courage, and patience subscales.
