ABSTRACT
Significant non-voluntary weight loss is relatively frequent diagnostic dilemma faced by the clinician, mainly in elderly patients. It must be looked for thoroughly, searching in a directed way through clinical history, asking the patients about non- voluntary weight loss, as it may relate to systemic disease. A review of the available literature on this subject is presented, intended to help in the orientation of diagnostic work-up of a patient whose presentation complaint or whose cause for referral is a significant and unexplained weight loss. The most frequent causes and the criteria for assessment triage of this problem are discussed.
