ABSTRACT
This study compared the clinical parameters of muscular palpation and self-perceived chewing side preference with the electromyographic activity of the masseter and temporal muscles. Six dentate patients with a diagnosis of temporomandibular disorder were selected for the experimental group; the control group consisted of four healthy volunteers. The right masseter and right temporal muscles of both groups exhibited a greaterelectromygraphic activity. The masseter muscles of patients with a temporomandibular disorder showed agreater electromyographic activity than the temporal muscles. Electrical activity indicates a tendency tohyperfunction, chewing side preference and joint pain, and is primarily associated with the activity of themasseter muscles.
