ABSTRACT
A descriptive study was conducted on the results of the laboratory diagnosis in patients with clinical impression of dermatophytosis, assisted either at the health area (Previsora policlinic)or at the dermatology visit of the Manual Ascunse Domenech teaching provincial hospital and who went to the microbiology laboratory to be tested for fungi between September 2001 and March 2002. The study enrolls 121 patients. One hundred forty six (146) samples were gathered and studied by direct microscopic examination and culture. Most of the patients came from the Primary Care, adults were the most affected and tinea pedis was the more frequent clinical form. Prior treatment influenced in laboratory results. Ninety one (91) samples were found positive. We recommended that prevention of dermatophytosis be included in activities of health promotion.
