RESUMEN
Se realizó un estudio descriptivo Observacional en el área de salud de la policlínica “Belkis Sotomayor Álvarez” de Ciego de Ávila durante el periodo de enero a diciembre del 2005 para conocer la prevalencia de diabetes mellitus, el predominio sexual y la edad de presentación de esta enfermedad así como el comportamiento de los antecedentes familiares en la población de 40 años o más teniendo en cuenta el aumento progresivo en la población mundial. Se tomaron en cuenta para el estudio 856 personas después de realizar un muestreo por conglomerado y se obtuvo una prevalencia de 14.4 por ciento, predominio del sexo femenino y prevalecieron las personas de la sexta década de la vida encontrándose además una relación directa de la enfermedad con los antecedentes familiares de la misma.
ABSTRACT
A descriptive observational study was conducted in a health area of the Belkis Sotomayor Älvarez” policlinic of Ciego de Avila, during the time period from January to December 2005, which purpose was to know the prevalence of diabetes mellitus, the predominant gender and the age of onset of the disease, as well as the behavior of family history in the population of 40 years of age or over, taking into consideration the progressive increase in the world-wide population. As many as 856 people were enrolled into the study after making a cluster-sampling, and a prevalence of (14,4%) was obtained, females prevailed as well as the individuals of the sixth decade of life; there being a direct relationship of the disease with family history.
