Cognición, emoción y sintomatología depresiva en adolescentes escolarizados / Cognition, emotion, and depressive symptoms in school adolescents

ABSTRACT

A characterisation of adolescents is presented in terms of positive and negative affect, automatic negative and positive thoughts and depressive symptomatology. An aleatory sample of 1096 adolescents 12 to 16 years old, from public and private schools from the city of Medellín (Colombia) was selected. 55.7 percent of the sample were male. The results show that male and female adolescents differ on the three evaluated variables. At the cognitive level, female adolescents showed more automatic negative thoughts; at an emotional level they showed higher levels of negative affect and more depressive symptoms. Male adolescents showed more positive thoughts, higher levels of positive affect and fewer depressive symptoms. This profile was more clear in the subgroup of adolescents with scores over the 75 percentile in the scale of depressive symptoms excepting negative affect.

RESUMEN

Se presenta una caracterización de adolescentes escolarizados en términos de afecto positivo y negativo, pensamientos automáticos negativos y positivos y sintomatología depresiva. Se tomó una muestra aleatoria de 1096 adolescentes (55,7 por ciento hombres) entre 12 y 16 años, tanto de instituciones educativas públicas como privadas,. Los resultados indican diferencias significativas en las tres variables estudiadas. Las mujeres adolescentes se caracterizan a nivel cognitivo por mayor presencia de pensamientos automáticos negativos y a nivel emocional por niveles más altos de afecto negativo y mayor presencia de sintomatología depresiva. Los hombres adolescentes presentaron más pensamientos positivos y niveles más altos de afecto positivo y menor tendencia a presentar sintomatología depresiva. Este perfil también se encontró y con mayor intensidad en el subgrupo de adolescentes con puntuaciones en la escala de sintomatología depresiva por encima del percentil 75, con excepción del afecto negativo.
