A favela e seus moradores: culpados ou vítimas? representações sociais em tempos de violência / The slum and its dwellers: guilties or victims? Socials representations in times of violence

ABSTRACT

As favelas, suas regras, códigos e seus moradores são objetos de estudo privilegiado por estarem cada vez mais associados a violência nas informações veiculadas na mídia. Utilizando a teoria das representações sociais procuramos investigar como cidadãos de classe média baixa percebem a violência atual, a favela e seus moradores. Os dados foram coletados através do método de evocação livre e analisados com o auxílio do software EVOC. Os resultados apontaram para uma percepção negativa e em movimento, relacionando cada vez mais a favela e seus moradores, às principais causas da violência na cidade. As representações sociais que vinculam a pobreza com a criminalidade podem gerar tomadas de posição e comportamentos que reforcem o preconceito e o alijamentodos moradores de favelas, aumentando os sentimentos de não pertencimento e negação dessa parcela da população.

RESUMO

Favela shanty towns, their rules, codes and residents are favoured objects of study because they are increasingly associated with the violence portrayed in information broadcast by the media. Using the theory of social representations we seek here to investigate how members of the lower middle class perceive present-day violence, favelas and their residents. The data were gathered using the free-evocation method and analysis was assisted by EVOC software. The results pointed to an adverse, shifting perception that increasingly relates favelas and their residents with the major causes of violence in Rio de Janeiro. Social representations linking poverty with criminality can lead to the adoption of positions and behaviours that reinforce prejudice and exclusion against favela residents, thus enhancing feelings of not belonging and of denial among this portion of the population.
