Conocimientos sobre cuidados paliativos de familiares de pacientes oncológicos / Knowledge on palliative care of oncologic patient's relatives

RESUMEN

La familia es una parte esencial dentro de la medicina paliativa. Contribuye a los cuidados del enfermo y tiene que recibir la atención e instrucción necesarias por parte del equipo de cuidados para no influir negativamente en la evolución del paciente. Para la medicina paliativa, la familia constituye un foco principal de atención. Se realizó un estudio descriptivo para diagnosticar nivel de conocimientos sobre cuidados paliativos (físicos, psíquicos y espirituales) de familiares de pacientes oncológicos y determinar el grado de satisfacción con la atención brindada por el equipo de salud en el policlínico "Octavio de la Concepción y la Pedraja", municipio Camajuaní, provincia Villa Clara en el período de junio 2005-enero de 2006. El universo estuvo constituido por un miembro de cada uno de los núcleos familiares de los pacientes oncológicos de nuestra área de salud. Se eligió al azar el 50 por ciento de los núcleos familiares, se incluyó a un familiar comprometido con la atención al enfermo, no formaron parte de la muestra los familiares de pacientes con buen pronóstico o aquellos no aptos física y/o mentalmente. Previo al inicio de la investigación se solicitó el consentimiento informado de los seleccionados. Para recoger información se aplicó un cuestionario previamente validado con la ayuda de expertos. Se constató que 51 por ciento de los encuestados posee conocimientos aceptables sobre los cuidados físicos, 63 por ciento medianamente aceptables sobre cuidados psíquicos y solo el 13,8 por ciento cuenta con los conocimientos necesarios sobre cuidados espirituales. Se concluye que la mayoría de las familias están satisfechas con la atención que reciben del equipo de salud y no poseen el nivel de conocimientos necesarios para brindar los cuidados paliativos(AU)

ABSTRACT

Family members are the core of palliative medicine. They contribute to the care of sick persons and they should receive the necessary attention and instruction as part of the care team no to exert a negative influence on the patient's evolution. Family is the main focus of attention for palliative medicine. A descriptive study was conducted to assess the level of knowledge of palliative care (physical, psychic, and spiritual) of the relatives of oncologic patients, and to determine the satisfaction degree in relation to the care provided by the health team of "Octavio de la Concepcion y la Pedraja" Polyclinic, Camajuaní Municipality, Villa Clara province, from June 2005 to January 2006. The sample consisted of a member of each family nucleus of the oncologic patients from our health area. 50 per cent of the family nuclei were selected at random. A relative involved in the patient's care was included. The relatives of the patients with good prognosis or of those who were not physical or mentally apt were not taken into consideration. Previous to the beginning of the investigation, the selected individuals were requested their informed consent. A questionnaire previously validated with the help of experts was applied to compile information. It was confirmed that 51 per cent of the surveyed had a proper level of knowledge on physical care, 63 per cent had a fair level, and only 13.8 per cent had the needed knowledge of spiritual care. It was concluded that most of the families were satisfied with the attention provided by the health team, and that they did not have the knowledge needed for palliative care(AU)
