La epilepsia: ¿un desafío bioético en el siglo XXI? / The epilepsy: an ethical challenge in the XXI century?

RESUMEN

Este trabajo se enmarca en el esfuerzo que realizamos para revitalizar la atención psicológica a los pacientes con epilepsia a partir del empleo de técnicas participativas y del fomento de los grupos de autoayuda. Se aplicó la técnica cualitativa del grupo focal a 30 pacientes con diagnóstico de epilepsia procedentes de las consultas especializadas de Ciudad de La Habana. Nos propusimos evaluar la pertinencia de un debate ético referente a la situación psicosocial del paciente con epilepsia. Los estigmas relacionados con esta enfermedad y los prejuicios que genera, provocan vivencias de subvaloracion y discriminación que son identificadas por los pacientes con epilepsia como verdaderos dilemas éticos. Las valoraciones que fueron expresadas en el contexto grupal señalan como aspectos dilemáticos de primer orden las limitaciones que se imponen al desarrollo personal y profesional de los pacientes y las deficiencias en la preparación de los profesionales de la salud en lo referente a la epilepsia. Además se expresaron los que se cuestionan otros derechos elementales, el acceso a la medicación y los prejuicios e ideas erróneas.

ABSTRACT

This work is framed in the effort that we carry out to revitalize the psychological attention to the patients with epilepsy starting from the employment of techniques to participate and of the development of the groups of self-help. The qualitative technique was applied from the focal group to 30 patients with diagnose of epilepsy coming from the specialized consultations of City of Havana . We intended to evaluate the relevancy of an ethical debate with respect to the patient's situation psychosocial with epilepsy. The stigmas related with this illness and the prejudices that it generates cause undervaluation to feel and discrimination that are identified by the patients with epilepsy like true ethical dilemmas. The valuations that were expressed in the context group point out as aspects dilemmas of first order the limitations that are imposed to the personal development and the patients' professional and the deficiencies in the preparation of the professionals of the health regarding the epilepsy. Those were also expressed that other elementary rights are questioned, the access to the medication and the prejudices and erroneous ideas.
