ABSTRACT
The doctoral theses presented at the Medical School of Bahia, in the nineteenth century, are a rich source of data for the study of the early interest in psychological issues in Brazil. Our basic purpose is to study the influence of Jean Martin Charcot (1825-1893) in five doctoral theses on hysteria presented at that institution. (Carneiro Ribeiro, 1886; Marques, 1890; Vieira de Mello, 1890; Lyra, 1891 e Bulcão, 1894). It was found that the doctoral candidates made 874 quotations of 283 professionals, having Charcot received 15% of those. It was also verified that 40 authors were remembered in a respectable and distinguished manner and again, the master of Salpêtrière appears in 36% of those occasions. After a period of criticism, we notice that Brazilian psychiatrists begin to welcome Charcots work. On the other hand, hysteria is no longer considered anosological category, being described in DSM-III as a Conversion Disorder.
