Entre a matéria e o espírito: sobre a constituição da neurose nos séculos XVIII-XIX / Between matter and spirit: on the constitution of neurosis in the XVIII-XIX centuries

RESUMO

Este trabalho teve como objetivo recuperar o surgimento da noção de neurose no século XVIII e na primeira metade do século XIX. Para este fim, foram consultados textos médicos do período selecionado, bem como trabalhos de historiadores acerca do tema em pauta, em bibliotecas de São Paulo e do Rio de Janeiro. Conclui-se, então, pela ‘filiação’ entre as noções de ‘vapores’, ‘nervos’, ‘desordens nervosas’ e ‘neurosis’, nesta seqüência, segundo nexos que foram gradativamente vinculando o distúrbio nervoso a problemas ‘morais’ e, finalmente, a conflitos entre fortes emoções, particularmente aquelas de natureza sexual, e a necessidade social de mantê-las reprimidas.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed at a reconstitution of the emergence of the notion of neurosis in the XVIII century and in the first half of the XIX century. For this purpose, we examined medical texts and papers from historians working on this subject, that were found in libraries in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. The conclusion we reached in our survey establishes an affiliation between the notions of “vapours” and “nervous disorders”, and between the latter and “neurosis”, forming a chain of meaning that linked the nervous disturbance first to “moral” issues, and then to conflicts involving intense emotions, particularly of a sexual nature, and the social need to repress them.
