ABSTRACT
The article discusses the symbolic elements produced by media. We tried to establish a dialogue between two of the most important social psychology theories on media studies Theodor Adorno´s work (the Frankfurt School) and John Thompson´s Depth Hermeneutics. In this confrontation we find substantial differences regarding the effects of media´s symbolic elements in social organization, in people´s interactions and in the construction of individual subjectivities. In spite of those differences, they share one basic concern as they consider media as an extremely important phenomenon in their analysis of complex modern society.
