RESUMEN

La cooperación médica entre países y en especial la ayuda de los galenos cubanos en la lucha de liberación de otros pueblos, en ejercicio de su profesión y también en combate, ha sido rasgo característico de los hijos de la nación cubana, lo que debe de haber comenzado en el siglo xix, durante las guerras de independencia de América, pero es poco conocido quienes fueron los primeros que tomaron esta actitud. Destacar la figura de Rafael Argilagos Ginferrer, uno de los primeros en este bregar. Se revisaron los archivos históricos de las ciudades de la Habana, Camagüey y Santiago de Cuba y otros documentos en busca de más información sobre la vida de Rafael. Nace en la ciudad de Puerto Príncipe, el 11 de octubre de 1835. Hijo de terrateniente catalán y criolla. Cursó estudios secundarios y universitarios de ingeniería militar en España; concluyó la carrera en París como ingeniero civil y luego la de médico, en 1860. Regresó a Cuba y en 1864 parte a incorporarse como médico a las huestes de Benito Juárez, en México, alcanzando en esa contienda los grados de comandante. Allí dirigió el Hospital Militar de Córdova como médico cirujano en jefe, y fue ayudante del jefe del ejército, General González Ortega. Regresó a Cuba en 1867 y un año después se incorporó a la primera guerra de independencia cubana. Murió luchando bajo el mando del General Manuel de Quesada, en 1870, con los grados de Brigadier ganados por su trabajo como médico, su excelente técnica militar y valentía en el combate.

ABSTRACT

Medical cooperation and in particular the help of Cuban physicians to the independence war of other countries, by practising their profession and also by participating in the struggle, has been a characteristic of the Cuban nation's sons and daughters. This should have begun in the 19th century during the independence wars waged in the Americas, but little is known about the first people who had adopted this attitude. To emphasize the personality of Rafael Argilagos Ginferrer, one of the first Cubans in this field. The historical records from Havana, Camaguey and Santiago de Cuba and other documents were reviewed in search for more information about Rafael´s life. He was born on October 11, 1835 in Puerto Príncipe. He was the son of a Catalan landowner and a Cuban woman. He studied secondary school and military engineering in Spain and also graduated as civil engineer in Paris and then as physician in 1860. He returned to Cuba but in 1864, he left the country to work as physician for Benito Juárez´s army in Mexico. He was promoted to the rank of Commander in this war. He led there the Military Hospital of Cordova as chief medical surgeon and was also an assistant to the Chief of Army named General Gonzales Ortega. He came back to Cuba in 1867 and one year later, he decided to participate in the first Cuban independence war. He died in battle in 1870 under the command of General Manuel de Quesada. At that time, he had already been promoted to the rank of brigadier general because of his work as physician, his excellent military technique and courage at the battlefield.
