OBJECTIVE:
To describe the resistance profile of microorganisms isolated from blood cultures in hospitalized adult patients. MATERIAL ANDMETHODS:
A retrospective and observational study was done with a database documenting the resistance profile of the isolatedmicroorganisms from the blood cultures taken by the Central Laboratory of the National Hospital Cayetano Heredia of Lima during 2004.RESULTS:
From 103 positive blood cultures, the most commonisolates were S. epidermidis (42,72%), S. aureus (22,33%), S. saprophyticus (6,80%), Candida sp. (5,83%) and E. coli (3,88%). Cephalosporins were the most used antibiotic with a 20% resistance for the most frequently isolated four bacteria.CONCLUSIONS:
Gram positive cocci were the most frequent isolated bacteria in bloodcultures and they had a high resistance to oxacillin, high sensitivity to vancomycin and high resistance to cephalosporins, the most used antibiotics.
