Diferencias cerebrales en prematuros y su relación con el desarrollo de sus funciones cognitivas / Brain differences in the infant born preterm related to their cognitive functions

RESUMEN

Actualmente gracias a los avances en neonatología, existe un aumento en la sobrevida de prematuros, cada vez más inmaduros. Sin embargo esto conlleva a que sean susceptibles de mayores complicaciones, como la presencia en ellos de déficit en sus funciones cognitivas o sensorio-motrices. Producto de lo anterior es que se vuelve de gran interés el estudio que relaciona algunos hitos evaluables del desarrollo psicomotor con las funciones cognitivas de los infantes prematuros. El objetivo de este artículo es contribuir a esta temática con una revisión de la literatura en relación a prematuridad y desarrollo cognitivo.

ABSTRACT

In the present, thanks to neonatology advances, a decrease on the rate of premature infant mortality appears together with a rise on the life expectancy of premature newborns, which are more immature at birth. Nevertheless, this leads to an increased vulnerability to deficiencies in their cognitive or sense-motor functions. That is why linking the neurodevelopment and premature infants' cognitive functions, is of great interest. This paper contributes to this topic with a review of the literature related to cognitive development and premature birth.
