ABSTRACT
The main issue in this article is the violent and subversive nature of the passions of the soul according to early modern documents that examine their nature and manifestations. The conclusion is that there was an ongoing discussion on the relationships between psychopathology and the violence of the pathos. This raised problems regarding the notion that there is a tie between mental health and wisdom.
