ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the incidence of the position of the impacted third inferior molar analysed by panoramic examination. A total of 258 panoramic radiographies were appraised from individuals of both sexes, ages ranging from 12 to 21 years, from the Post Graduate Orthodontic Program of the São Paulo Metodista University. To evaluate the positioning of the third inferior molars it was used the WinterÆs classification, that relates the following positions horizontal, vertical, labial/lingual, distoangular, mesioangular and inverted. The results showed larger incidence of the mesioangular position (82,50%), following by the vertical position (64,63%) and distoangular position (29,61%). Only 0,33% of the included teeth were found in the position labial/lingual and none in the inverted position, among the radiographies evaluated.
