ABSTRACT
In Brazil, ethical behavior in research involving humans is regulated by Resolution nº 196, from October 10th, 1996, of the National Health Council. All research must comply with fundamental ethical and scientific demands. A research is considered ethical when it follows the principles of autonomy, beneficence, non maleficence, justice and fairness. Prescription of placebo in controlled randomized trials, without taking into account the existence of other available and effective treatments characterizes noncompliance of a doctor’s moral duty (to benefit patients) and withhold the patients’ rights to choose the best available treatment. In the present article, the author reports his experience with two projects of homeopathic research submitted to the ethics committee of the Federal University of São Paulo.
